In an inspiring display of youthful ambition, 15-year-old Saviour Bright of Government College, Surulere, officiated the first half of a thrilling friendly match between Fortune FC and Femi Gbajabiamila Football Academy, which ended seven goals to three in favour of the latter.<\/p>\n

Saviour, who also plays for the Femi Gbajabiamila Football Academy, is not only passionate about football but is also building a budding career as a referee. Speaking to Sports247<\/em> after the match, the SS1 student shared how his interest in officiating began at the age of 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started having hopes of being a referee in 2023,\u201d<\/em> Saviour said. \u201cRefereeing is not a hard job. It\u2019s an easy job that one can use to earn a living.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Unlike many professional referees who undergo formal training, Saviour\u2019s journey has been purely instinctual and inspired by his assistant coach, Mr. Taiwo, who also officiates games. \u201cWhen I saw him officiate, I liked it and decided to try it too,\u201d<\/em> he explained.<\/p>\n

Although he hasn\u2019t received formal referee training yet, Saviour has already officiated several matches, including a JOS quarterfinal at the Legacy Pitch. His involvement in both officiating and playing has shaped his dual dreams of becoming a professional footballer and a certified referee.<\/p>\n

Currently training with B Unit Football Academy in Ebute Metta, Saviour finds balance between his academic responsibilities and athletic commitments. \u201cWe close from school at 2 o\u2019clock and training starts at 3:30, so I manage both,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cI also train on weekends.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Inspired by football icon Lionel Messi, Saviour advises other young aspiring referees to stay focused and put in the effort. Looking ahead, he hopes to obtain official refereeing certifications after secondary school to take his passion to the professional level.<\/p>\n

With discipline, passion, and support from mentors, Saviour Bright is charting a unique course\u2014proof that the future of Nigerian football is indeed bright.<\/p>\n
