Through the #PLInspires programme, Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Media Experience Evening gave secondary school students the chance to experience being sports journalists.
Held during Wigan Athletic’s thrilling EFL Trophy match against Fleetwood Town, students took part in a media careers workshop and Q&A with players from Wigan Athletic’s U18 squad pre-match, before writing their very own match report from the press box during the game.
It gave students interested in a career in sports and media real-world experience of what it is like to work in a professional sports environment.
The media careers workshop was delivered by Wigan Athletic’s Community Media Officer Dan Newton, who gave an insight into the different job roles in sports media as well as the different pathways students can take into the industry.
Students were then joined by members of Wigan Athletic’s U18 squad, Eko Soloman, Harry Rimmer and Nathan Sandison, who took part in a mock press conference with the students to about their careers and life as an Academy player.
This was followed up by a presentation about writing match reports, which was delivered by Wigan Athletic’s Media Executive Jay Whittle, before the students joined other journalists in the press box to write their own match reports about Latics’ thrilling 3-3 draw and penalty victory against Fleetwood Town in the EFL Trophy.
