‘One of the best saves I’ve ever seen live’ – Newcastle Hall of Famer Ameobi hails Liverpool GK Alisson:: All Nigeria Soccer

Newcastle United legend Shola Ameobi has hailed Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker for his astonishing save during the first half of the Reds’ come-from-behind win against the Magpies.

 

Ameobi, who was inducted into the Newcastle United Foundation Hall of Fame in November 2017, was among the spectators at St James’ Park on Sunday evening. 

 

The retired Nigeria international is currently Newcastle United’s loan coordinator, a role he has held since June 2019. 

 

Newcastle United seemed to be cruising to victory after Anthony Gordon’s opener in the 25th minute but they collapsed late in the game to allow Jurgen Klopp’s side snatch all three points despite the visitors playing with ten men for more than one hour after Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk was shown a straight red card. 

 

Liverpool had Alisson to thank for keeping them in the game as he produced a brilliant save to prevent Miguel Almiron from doubling the advantage in the 36th minute.

 

Alisson pushed a half volley from the Newcastle number 24 onto the frame of the goal before pushing the ball away for a corner. 

 

Ameobi reckons that Alisson’s save is the best he has seen live and added that Newcastle United lost because they were wasteful in front of goal. 

 

“Clearly, you’re playing against ten men, you’re in the ascendency, you’re at home. Generally, you look at the chances that we created. Certainly the first game of the season, we put every thing away,” Ameobi told Premier League Productions. 

“Obviously if this goes in it’s game over, that was unlucky, that was such a great run. You have to say you look at the one that Alisson saved in the first half. It’s one of the best saves I’ve even seen live. 

“We had enough chances to put the game away and that’s the disappointing thing for Newcastle. It’s important that they regroup.

 

“For Liverpool, these are those type of games that can really make your season, you can resurrect it. On the flip side for Newcastle, it’s just a deflating defeat in a game that clearly they should have won.”

 

A product of the Newcastle United academy, Ameobi  scored 79 goals in 397 appearances for his boyhood club.
