The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has rewarded the victorious Team Lagos contingent for their outstanding performance at the 2025 National Youth Games held in Delta State, where the state topped the medal table for the first time in the history of the competition for under-15 athletes.

Team Lagos emerged overall champions of the 9th National Youth Games, held in Asaba last month, dethroning host Delta State with a total of 110 medals — 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze.

At a state reception held in honour of the athletes, coaches, and officials at the Lagos State House, Ikeja, on Friday, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the youngsters for their record-breaking achievement and praised the Lagos State Sports Commission under the leadership of Director General Lekan Fatodu for steering the team to success.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing young talents and supporting grassroots sports development across the state.

“This victory is not just about medals; it is about hard work, discipline, and the spirit of excellence that defines Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said. “We will continue to invest in our young athletes and ensure they have the facilities and support to reach their full potential.”

He encouraged the athletes to remain focused and maintain a balance between sports and education, emphasizing that the state government would continue to create opportunities for youth to excel at both national and international levels.

The highlight of the event was the announcement of cash rewards for medalists, non-medalists, coaches, and officials of the Lagos State Sports Commission in recognition of their efforts in achieving the historic feat.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s gesture, described by many as a morale booster, further underscores Lagos State’s growing reputation as a leader in youth sports development in Nigeria.
