Osayi-Samuel discusses AFCON debut, win against GNB, what Nigerians should expect against Cameroon 

Fenerbahce right back Bright Osayi-Samuel has given his assessment about the performance of the Super Eagles against Guinea-Bissau in their last group game in the  2023 Africa Cup of Nations and has declared they have the wherewithal to defeat Cameroon in the next round.

Heading into the tournament, the 26-year-old was one of the players never to have featured at AFCON having just made his debut for Nigeria in November 2022 in a friendly game against Portugal.

 

He made his AFCON debut as a late substitute against Equatorial Guinea and was handed his first start against the Wild Dogs where he featured for 80 minutes.

 

Speaking in an interview after today’s training session, the right-back has expressed his delight upon making his debut in the tournament and gave his assessment of the team against Guinea-Bissau.

” For me as my first in AFCON games, it was a great feeling for me.

 

“I think in general, I think we played well because we had  clean sheet and everyone in this AFCON is positive in terms of the defense.

*I think collectively we had many chances again  and I think our aim now is just that we know of course that we will get many chances every game with the quality that  we have, it is now about converting these chances you know.

“I think overall the game was good, it is a learning curve now, to see what we can improve to do our best in our next game against Cameroon”.

When asked about what Nigerians should expect against Cameroon, the Blackpool academy product declared his confidence that the Super Eagles have what it takes to defeat the Indomitable Lions.

“Of course now, it is knockout  you know ,so there is no three points, you win you are through and if you lose you are out.

“We know that comes with pressure but you know like I said in our group, we have players who has experience you know in this situation that we are in now and I think we have the players that thrive in this situation.

 

“So, I think if you look around the group, everyone is confident, everyone looking forward to the game, me myself.”

 

“Cameroon are a very strong team, they have got good players, but like I said, if we focus on ourselves and look at what we can do and how we can hurt them, then I think we have a good chance of winning the game”.

Nottingham Forest right-back Ola Aina has been preferred over Osayi-Samuel and it remains to be seen whether the latter will keep his place against Cameroon on Saturday.
