Benin City-born CB, two other 17-year-olds of Nigerian descent named in Liverpool’s PL squad:: All Nigeria Soccer

Liverpool have submitted their squad list for the first half of the 2023-2024 Premier League season following the closure of the summer transfer window.  

Twenty-two players have been registered on Liverpool’s main list with six classed as homegrown players. 

A homegrown player is defined as ‘a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)’.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has supplemented his squad with 65 players classed as U21 players and scholars of which three are 17-year-olds eligible to represent the Nigeria national teams.

First-year scholars Afolami Onanuga and Louis Enahoro-Marcus, and Wellity Lucky who signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in April 2023 are available for selection. 

Louis Enahoro-Marcus was born in Benin City, Nigeria and is the younger brother of former Watford youth teamer Darrin Enahoro-Marcus.

He has been described as a commanding central defender who joined Liverpool as an U10 player. 

Highly-rated box-to-box midfielder Onanuga has been on the books of Liverpool since U11 level and Zaragoza-born centre-back Lucky arrived at the academy as an U13 player.
